Our vision is to transform language education.
As a locally grounded and internationally minded hub for language education transformation, our mission is to empower language educators, engage language learners, and enhance language learning and teaching practices through innovation, research, advocacy, and professional development.
CeLta's core programs
The Community Language School, housed in CeLTA, is dedicated to support, maintain, and enhance global competence in communities across Michigan, the United States and globally. We offer a variety of language programs for preschoolers (ages 3-6), children (ages 6-9), pre-teens & teens (ages 10-14) and adults (18+).
CeLTA is an active research unit. Currently, we are finishing two edited volumes, “Language Program Vitality in the United States: From Surviving to Thriving in Higher Education” and “Sharing Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) in Higher Education: Collaboration and Innovation.” Other current research projects include undergraduate enrollments in language courses, course sharing, physical learning spaces, and accessibility for language learning.
This cross-university initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and housed in the CeLTA, utilizes the established and widely recognized strengths within the Big Ten Academic Alliance to collaboratively develop an online model of less commonly taught language (LCTL) instruction reflecting best practices in proficiency-oriented instruction.
We offer opportunities
At CeLTA, we are passionate about making language learning and teaching more engaging, more meaningful, more effective, and more accessible. We are not only constantly exploring innovative ways but also sharing them on campus and beyond.
CeLTA connects people, programs, and departments on campus and in the world to create a better understanding of how and why to teach and learn languages.
CeLTA seeks to create engaging, supportive and accessible advancement and experiential learning opportunities and spaces for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and the communities beyond MSU.
