In the past, the Community Language School has offered a variety of face-to-face programs for children and youth. During spring and fall semesters, we have offered weekly classes for preschoolers (ages 3-6), children (ages 6-9), pre-teens (10-12), teens (ages 13+) and adults (18+). In the summer, we have offered week-long day-camps on campus.
Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are no longer offering face-to-face classes. Instead, we are offering online programs for all ages.
CLS In-Person Programs (In Hiatus)
Our preschooler programs introduce children to the target language and culture in a playful way. By speaking in the target language throughout the entire class, the children are immersed in the language and become familiarized with the sounds of the language while learning to say simple phrases. The focus of the class is on listening and speaking, supported by visual cues.
Our kids programs are designed to provide a fun learning environment that focuses on playful interactions in the target language. It will sensitize children to language learning, help them acquire an awareness and appreciation of other cultures, enhance their understanding of the native language, and hopefully motivate them to pursue language study. We emphasize functional language use and cultural awareness.
Our pre-teen programs focus on developing speaking and listening skills and introduce students to
various aspects of the target culture and country/countries where the language is spoken. Students are introduced to different facets of the target language and culture, expand their existing knowledge, and increase their abilities in speaking and listening while incorporating some reading and writing in the target language. This program serves as a stepping stone to students appreciating the
target language and culture and creates the global mindset.
Want to learn a new language or get better at a language you are already studying? Our teen programs focus on developing speaking skills on daily topics with reading and writing used as support. Classes are designed to immerse students in the target language through popular audio and visual media like music, films, comics, popular TV shows, etc. as well as through stories and folktales.
Our adult programs are designed for those busy adults who have had no or little previous instruction in the language and for those who wish to brush up on their speaking skills. It is ideal for those seeking to hone in their practical communication skills to carry on a basic conversations during travel (e.g. at an airport, hotel, train station, or a restaurant, etc.). Learn about the nuances of how to navigate a different
culture and experience the joy of being back on campus through this
enriching opportunity that will help you keep your brain fit and stay
Our summer camps introduce kids and teens to different languages and cultures by providing a fun learning environment that focuses on games, songs, and other playful interactions. The curricula are theme-based and include topics of interest and relevance to children. Different activity types are alternated with games and hands-on as well as visually activated learning.
