The Center for Language Teaching Advancement and The Department of Romance and Classical Studies would like to thank The Writing Center for their collaboration and for sharing their space in the MSU Main Library with the Spanish Writing Center.

The Spanish Writing Center (SWC) is a collective effort between the Romance and Classical Studies Department (RCS) and the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA).

The Center for Language Teaching Advancement would also like to thank the Graduate Assistants (GAs) who have made the Spanish Writing Center what it is today.

2020-2021

Laura Zalazar, at the time an M.A. student in Spanish Linguistics), served as the first SWC operations GA in 2020-2021. Laura extensively researched writing center paradigms to inform the development of MSU’s SWC, developed the first iteration of SWC procedures and operations, and established consultations with a team of three undergraduate students, the first group of writing mentors. Laura’s work was fundamental in paving the way for the services that we provide today, and the SWC thanks her for her foundational contribution.

2021-2022

Lau Romero, at the time a PhD candidate in Latin American Cultural Studies, took seamless ownership of the SWC the following year (2021-2022). Lau infused our first iteration of materials and procedures with pragmatic and equitable nuance, creating a more robust experience for both students and writing mentors. Lau was able to build and expand on our first iteration; they dedicated energy to developing rich training materials not only for writing mentors but also for future SWC operations GAs. This includes our first full operations manual and polished SWC Operations GA job description. The SWC  will be forever grateful for Lau’s help in polishing our continual progress.

Monique Yoder, at the time a PhD student in Second Language Studies, guided us through our first research project in 2021-2022: a focus group to highlight the successes of our first two years as a writing center from the perspective of the writing mentees. She has a strong background in TESOL and writing pedagogy, which have been essential tools for the development of the writing center. With her help, we were able to strengthen our practices and provide more useful opportunities for everyone at the writing center. We couldn’t be more thankful!

2022-2023

Kailey Henderson, currently a PhD student in Hispanic Cultural Studies, jumped into SWC operations with both feet and never looked back. She built upon the foundation laid in our first two years of operation by shaping existing procedures to be more efficient and streamlined. She instituted a 30-minute weekly community building meeting with writing mentors.
