Our vision is to transform language education.

As a locally grounded and internationally minded hub for language education transformation, our mission is to empower language educators, engage language learners, and enhance language learning and teaching practices through innovation, research, advocacy, and professional development.

CeLta's core programs

Our MA and Certificate are both fully online, fully accredited, and designed to provide a meaningful educational experience

Professional Development

We provide PD for the MSU community as well as colleagues through the world. We offer online PD as well as faculty learning communities.

We also offer the Online Language Teaching Program (OLT) for educators worldwide.

The National Less Commonly Taught Languages Resource Center (National LCTL Resource Center; NLRC) is a Department of Education/Title VI-funded national language resource center housed in CeLTA.

Research

CeLTA is an active research unit. Currently, we are finishing two edited volumes, “Language Program Vitality in the United States: From Surviving to Thriving in Higher Education” and “Sharing Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) in Higher Education: Collaboration and Innovation.” Other current research projects include undergraduate enrollments in language courses, course sharing, physical learning spaces, and accessibility for language learning.

This cross-university initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and housed in the CeLTA, utilizes the established and widely recognized strengths within the Big Ten Academic Alliance to collaboratively develop an online model of less commonly taught language (LCTL) instruction reflecting best practices in proficiency-oriented instruction.

The Language School

Since 2002, the language departments at Michigan State University have offered community-based language and culture outreach programs on campus and at area schools. Our programming has expanded over the years to include a variety of programs for preK-12 students as well as professional development opportunities for K-16 teachers. In 2008, we officially launched the Community Language School (CLS) as part of the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA). All programs are organized and conducted by MSU faculty members, graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and community members.
