The Community Language School offers a variety of weekly classes for preschoolers (ages 3-6), children (ages 6-9), pre-teens/teens (10-14) and adults (18+). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be offering online classes and events in lieu of our face-to-face programs. 

Spring 2021 youth classes - online

Our online language courses are designed to provide a fun, virtual learning environment which will introduce kids to different languages and cultures with a focus on developing oral communication skills. Our family programs are offered for kids 3-6 years of age, kids programs for children 6-9 years of age and pre-teen/teen programs for kids 10-14 years of age. Our live classes via Zoom (links will be sent the week before classes begin) taught by qualified teachers. The family and kids classes will meet once a week for 45 minutes and our Pre-Teen/Teen classes will meet once a week for 60 minutes. All classes will run for 10 weeks beginning January 18th – March 29.

*There will be no class meetings the week of March 8-12*

Registration fee: $80

Note: We require a minimum enrollment limit of 8 students to run our programs and will accept no more than 10 students. We will not process your payment until we reach our minimum enrollment of 8 participants. You will be charged only if we meet our minimum enrollment limit to run the program. A confirmation will be sent to you via email for each program you are registered for.

Family Language Classes

Ages 3-6

Our live online programs for children (ages 3-9) provide an introduction to the target language and culture in a playful way. By speaking in the target language throughout the entire class, the children are immersed in the language and become familiarized with the sounds of the language while learning to say simple phrases. The focus of the class is on listening and speaking, supported by visual cues. A parent/guardian must be present during class on Zoom.

Kids Language Classes

Ages 6-9

Our live online programs for kids (ages 6-9) are designed to provide a fun learning environment that focuses on playful interactions in the target language. It will sensitize children to language learning, help them acquire an awareness and appreciation of other cultures, enhance their understanding of the native language, and hopefully motivate them to pursue language study. We emphasize functional language use and cultural awareness.

Pre-Teens & Teens Language Classes

Ages 10-14

Our live online programs for pre-teens and teens (ages 10-14) focus on developing speaking and listening skills and introduce students to various aspects of the target culture and country/countries where the language is spoken. Students are introduced to different facets of the target language and culture, expand their existing knowledge, and increase their abilities in speaking and listening while incorporating some reading and writing in the target language.

SPRING 2021 adult classes - online

Our online language courses are designed for those busy adults who have had some or no previous instruction in the language and for those who wish to brush up on their speaking skills. It is ideal for anyone wishing to acquire communication skills in a foreign language and learn about cultures and traditions of the various regions where the language is spoken. Our classes are offered in various levels:

Beginners – Advanced Beginners: For those who have had little to no experience in the language.

Advanced Beginners – Low Intermediate: For those who have had some prior experience with the language.

Intermediate – High: For those who have had more than 1 year experience with the language.

Our small group classes will be held live via Zoom by instructors from Michigan State University. Experience the joy of learning a language in the comfort of your own home and interacting with other like-minded people through this enriching opportunity to navigate a different culture and keep your brain intellectually fit and sharp. Classes will be held once a week, 1.5 hours per week via Zoom (links will be sent the week before classes begin) from the week of January 18th – March 29.
